Tomaree Head Summit Walk: Breathtaking Views of Port Stephens Guide

The Tomaree Head Summit Walk is a rewarding hike that offers unparalleled panoramic views of Port Stephens, the coastline, and the surrounding islands. Located within Tomaree National Park, this relatively short but steep climb leads to the summit of Tomaree Head, where you'll be treated to stunning vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see. It's a must-do for anyone visiting the area who enjoys a bit of outdoor adventure. Tomaree Head has a rich history, serving as an important lookout point for both Aboriginal people and European settlers. During World War II, the headland was fortified with gun emplacements to protect the entrance to Port Stephens. Remnants of these fortifications can still be seen along the walking track, adding a historical dimension to the natural beauty of the area. The main activity is, of course, the summit walk itself. The well-maintained track winds its way through coastal heath and forest, offering glimpses of the ocean along the way. Once at the summit, take your time to soak in the views, snap some photos, and learn about the area's history from the interpretive signage. You can also explore the old gun emplacements and imagine what life was like during the war. Keep an eye out for whales during migration season (May-November).

Transportation

You can drive to the Tomaree Head car park, located at the end of Shoal Bay Road. From Nelson Bay, follow Shoal Bay Road towards Shoal Bay.
